Australia is a country as beautiful as it is varied. It is difficult to pick the most beautiful places in Australia.

The country holds such a wide variety of topography and scenery. Despite the challenge, we’ve narrowed it down to these four most gorgeous Australian destinations.

Whitsunday Islands

Whitsunday Islands The Most Beautiful Places in Australia

What better place to start talking about beautiful places in Australia than with the Whitsunday Islands? This grouping of 74 islands features white sand beaches and serene turquoise waters perfect for water sports.

It is also the perfect base from which to explore the nearby Great Barrier Reef.

Swim, snorkel and scuba dive with thousands of brightly coloured fish and the diverse corals of the Great Barrier Reef and fringing reefs around islands such as Blue Pearl Bay and Fairey Reef.

See the local wildlife it its natural habitat and witness diverse marine life including humpback whales, dolphins, turtles and dugongs.

Explore the Whitsunday Coast and Hinterland and visit Peter Faust Dam in Proserpine, where you can fish for barramundi and spot local birdlife. There are walking trails that wind across Conway National Park on the mainland,

where you can explore the natural landscapes with stunning vistas around every corner and beautiful seasonal waterfalls like Cedar Creek Falls. –Tourism Whitsundays

Be sure to visit Whitehaven beach, which is the largest in the Whitsundays. It is also the most beautiful beach in all of Australia.

Uluru

Uluru Australian Destinations

You may not have known its name but you will instantly recognize this sandstone monolith located in the Outback.

This is one of the top Australian destinations and needs to be added to your list when visiting this amazing country.

Rising dramatically from the Central Australian desert, the huge red rock of Uluru is one of Australia’s most iconic attractions. It stands 348 metres high and has a circumference of 9.4 km.

Uluru is at its most stunning around sunrise and sunset, when the golden light makes the rock’s colours come alive.

For the Anangu people, Uluru is inseparable from Tjukurpa, or traditional law.

The actions of the creation ancestors are still visible around the rock, and their stories are passed on from generation to generation, just as they have been for thousands of years. –Parks Australia

Lake Hillier

For a truly unique experience, a trip to see the famed Lake Hillier is a must when visiting Australia.

This small lake sits on Middle Island off the coast of Western Australia just next to the Pacific Ocean. It glows a bright bubblegum pink, delighting its visitors. It is no wonder this is one of the most beautiful places in Australia.

The reason of its unique colour is still a topic that is not fully understood by scientists. Most suspect it has to do with the presence of the Dunaliella salina microalgae.

The Dunaliella produces carotenoids, a pigment found in carrots as well. But the presence of halophilic bacteria in the salt crusts could be another explanation.

A reaction between the salt and the sodium bicarbonate that is found in the water may cause it as well. –Hillier Lake

Horizontal Falls

The Horizontal Falls are a major attraction of the Kimberley region of the Outback.

The tidal waterfalls located deep within Talbot Bay in the Buccaneer Archipelago are unlike any other waterfall, the water passes horizontally.

Although they are called waterfalls, this natural phenomenon actually consists of intense tidal currents hurtling through two narrow coastal gorges.

Massive tidal movements create a waterfall effect as water banks up against one side of the narrow cliff passage, to be repeated again on the turning tide. –Kimberley Australia
