On the first Monday in May, The Costume Institute throws a massive fundraising gala which has become known as the Met Gala.
The gala is the unofficial kickoff of the summer’ social calendar. The invite-only event is attended by the most famous faces in music, fashion, film, and art.
Each year’s event has a theme which coordinates with one of the museum’s prominent exhibits. Attendees wear opulent fashions in line with this theme.

The Costume Institute’s spring 2019 exhibition will explore the origins of the camp aesthetic, and how it has evolved from a place of marginality to become an important influence on mainstream culture.
Met Gala theme 2019 is Camp: Notes On Fashion to coordinate with this new museum exhibit. Costume Institute curator, Andrew Bolton, created the exhibition around Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp.’” Past themes have included “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” “Manus x Machina,” “Punk: Chaos to Couture,” and” China: Through the Looking Glass.”
