Basq House – Elise Hassey BASQ
Revel in this luxe home-away-from-home hotel in the heart of Byron Bay
Why stay here
Part luxury home; part boutique hotel, Basq House feels like you’re staying with a friend with exceptional taste – almost like your own pied-a-terre.
Tucked off a hidden laneway, the 32 room boho-inspired hotel feels at once removed from Byron Bay’s ubiquitous crowds yet plants you at the heart of the bustling coastal town.
Wedged between Marvell Street and Fletcher Lane, the locale is hard to beat, unless water vistas are non-negotiable. A stone’s throw from cobalt waves, boutiques, buzzing restaurants and bars, this luxe newcomer– the latest in a slew of upscale openings – ticks all the boxes.

Design
Fully embracing the tropical vernacular of Australia’s wellness capital, Basq’s undulating brick façade – inspired by local rock formations – is easy to miss. This was always architect Matt Dalby’s intention.
Breeze blocks, oversized terracotta pots and Lekker bikes await guests arriving at the discreet entrance. Kivari jumpsuit-clad staff swap our luggage for a glass of (complimentary) chilled Blanc de Blanc, ushering us inside.
Hemmed by cabanas, overhanging palms and pastel pink umbrellas, the house-style sanctuary with interiors by local designer Léo Terrando pays homage to a traditional riad and centres around a heated magnesium pool.
Seasoned general manager Laurent Boutonne welcomes us like long lost friends. He shows us around Basq’s speakeasy style lounge with works by Byron Bay artist Damian Bisogni and the intimate library featuring weaved pendant lights, bespoke Pampa rugs and objects d’art. We take our drinks out to the pool deck, already feeling right at home.

The experience
Guests chat congenially, snooze by the logo embossed pool and play boardgames. Private nooks are perfect for curling up with a good book, while drinks are served from the travertine tiled front desk which doubles as a bar (try stopping at one coconut margarita).
Reclining on sun lounges we’re lulled into poolside reverie by a curated playlist of chilled tunes while Basq’s signature scent of sandalwood and exotic spice wafts on the balmy breeze.
After dinner we retire to the cosy library with its three-panelled Brazilian Rainforest artwork, carved wooden masks and hand-picked art and design tomes.
Sinking into low-slung leather sofas by the gas fireplace, we flick through books and glossy magazines and order a nightcap. It’d be rude not to.

Accommodation
The Morocco-meets-retro-luxe aesthetic continues in all 32 rooms with their functional and minimalist sensibility. Hand-written welcome notes left on crisp white pillows offer a personal touch.
True to its name our Pool Room (the pick of six room types) overlooks the sparkling pool hemmed by swaying palms and overlooking neighbouring rooftops.
All monochromatic rooms feature king size beds, custom honey-hued timber joinery, travertine bathroom floors, Mr Smith toiletries, HD TVs with Chromecast and minibars touting local artisanal fare.
We mix a pre batched Maybe Sammy cocktail, slip into ochre linen bathrobes and open the doors to our Juliette balcony. We drift off to sleep, drapes billowing, to a soundtrack of distant waves crashing upon the shore.

Food and drink
Eventually you’ll need to prise yourself off a cabana and find somewhere to eat. While there’s no restaurant on site (only a bar snack menu along with morning pastries, batch brew coffee and tea from a self-service bar) some of NSW’s best restaurants lie on Basq’s doorstep.
Continue the Moroccan theme with dinner and drinks at the Mez Club, follow the locals to Asian fusion hotspot Bang Bang and enjoy a vino and bite to eat at Bar Heather, the love child of two long-time wine importers and 2024 NSW Regional Restaurant of the Year.
Most notably, we enjoy a long, memorable lunch of modern Australian fare with a Mediterranean bent at hatted Raes, watching a parade of whales and calves heading home. Afterwards we plunge into the waves at Wategoes Beach, returning with wet hair and salty skin for yet more pool time at Basq.

Wellness
Complimentary healthy snacks, tea, coffee and citrus infused filtered water are perks offered throughout the day. Head to the newly unveiled rooftop deck for a self-guided yoga class or do a spot of meditation while soaking up expansive views over Byron. A plethora of day spas, yoga studios, beachside trails and more lie within easy reach.
Special touches
Complimentary Lekker bikes, beach shades and foam candy-coloured surfboards are but a few of the many thoughtful inclusions.
Guests can also hire share vehicles (compact, automatic MG ZS) for a half or full day’s exploration of the bucolic hinterland or Gold Coast.
