TIPS FOR TRAVEL TO UGANDA

We want you to explore every corner of our beautiful country, travel like a local, and enjoy your journey while staying safe. Keep the following recommendations in mind:

Some travelers need a visa to visit Uganda, so be sure to check the list of eligible countries before purchasing your ticket and confirm the entry requirements based on the country of your passport.

Uganda is a place with happy and hospitable people with beautiful landscapes and weather and the adventure awaits, just remember:

Book tours offered by authorized travel agencies

Always check the local weather conditions and forecasts before you take a tour.

Make sure the tour guide provides you the safety instructions and the activity´s regulation before starting the tour.

Ensure the company has the tour operating license from the Uganda Tourism Board, and certified tour guides.

PACKING ESSENTIALS

Uganda’s climate varies across regions and seasons, so packing accordingly is important. Bring lightweight, breathable clothing for the warm, humid areas, and warmer layers for cooler evenings in higher altitude regions like Bwindi or the Rwenzori Mountains.

Don’t forget sun protection like hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen, and insect repellent to guard against mosquitoes. A lightweight rain jacket is useful, especially during the rainy seasons from March to May and September to November.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Ensure you are up to date on vaccinations before traveling to Uganda. Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory for entry, and malaria prevention is strongly recommended, especially if you’ll be in rural areas.

Carry a basic first aid kit with essentials like hand sanitizer, antiseptic, bandages, and any prescription medications. For safety, stick to recommended tourist areas, avoid traveling alone at night, and take care of your belongings in crowded places.

MONEY TIPS

Traveling on a budget? No worries! Uganda offers a wide range of activities and experiences for travelers of all budgets, ensuring everyone can enjoy the adventure.

The Uganda Shilling is the currency of Uganda.

US$ dollars and major currencies are widely accepted.

Exchange money only at banks and approved change offices. Check exchange rate here

Bank transactions require a valid passport (not a copy nor a picture).

ATMs are located throughout the country and work 24/7.

TRANSPORTATION

Uganda offers various transportation options, from boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis) to buses and private cars. While boda-bodas are a convenient way to get around cities, they can be risky, so ensure you wear a helmet and prefer registered providers.

For longer trips, hiring a private driver or using a taxi service is a safer and more comfortable choice. For road trips, 4×4 vehicles are recommended, especially for visiting national parks or remote areas.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

Travel insurance is crucial for your trip to Uganda, covering unexpected events like medical emergencies, flight cancellations, or lost luggage.

Make sure your insurance policy includes medical evacuation, especially if you plan to engage in activities like hiking, gorilla trekking, or exploring remote areas. Confirm that your policy covers any specific adventure sports or activities you plan to undertake.

LOCAL LANGUAGE

Many Ugandans speak English fluently, but Kiswahili is widely spoken as well. In the central region, where the capital city is located, Luganda is commonly used. When planning your trip, it’s helpful to refresh your English skills. Consider downloading audio lessons to your mobile device for on-the-go practice or keeping a pocket translator handy to assist with communication.

Main Languages Spoken in Uganda include: English, Kiswahili, Luganda (Central), Runyankole (Western), Acholi (Northern), Lusoga & Iteso (Eastern) however there are 56+ tribes allover the country.

Cellphone & Connectivity

An unlocked cell phone will work in Uganda, but be sure to contact your service provider before you travel to add global roaming to your plan.

Alternatively, you can purchase a prepaid SIM card and use your unlocked phone while in Uganda. SIM cards are available at the airport right after immigration or at the nearest phone store, such as MTN, Airtel, or Lyca Mobile, on your way from Entebbe International Airport. Most Cafés, hotels, Lodges and some restaurants in the cities also have WiFi in case you want to get online on the go.

FOOTWEAR

When heading on vacation, the goal is to keep it as stress-free as possible. Paying attention to the small details can help avoid any hiccups. Don’t forget the right shoes! With so many exciting activities to enjoy in Uganda, you won’t want your footwear to hold you back or cause discomfort. A pair of sandals and good sneakers should suffice, but if you’re planning any serious hiking or climbing, consider opting for more durable options like hiking boots.
