The Peninsula Bangkok is excited to announce the residency of Thai textile virtuoso Jarupatcha Achavasmit as part of The Peninsula’s celebrated global art programme, Art in Resonance.
During her residency, Ms Achavasmit will be creating mesmerising new pieces for an upcoming on-property exhibit. Though early July, guests can visit her working studio space at the hotel to learn more about the process of creating the art and the concept of the programme.
Stunning Works with a Sustainable Message
During her residency, which Ms. Achavasmit calls “Sanctuary Within,” she will be weaving a specially commissioned series of art pieces incorporating recycled materials – including hotel items like office paper, used linens, and aluminium amenity tubes – in her studio on 23rd floor of The Peninsula Bangkok. Guests are encouraged to visit the studio to see the artist’s work in progress, to ask questions about her craft, and to take part in regularly scheduled weaving workshops. One-on-one workshops with Ms. Achavasmit will be available each week for the duration of her residency; she will also hold monthly weaving workshop for small groups (of up to six people).
“Jarupatcha’s textiles are exquisite, also deeply thought-provoking,” said Masahisa Oba, Managing Director of The Peninsula Bangkok. “In this case, her works allow us to think about what we consider waste, and what we consider valuable.”
Sanctuary Within exhibition by Jarupatcha Achavasmit is set to launch at The Peninsula Bangkok on 9 July 2024 and will be on view until the end of August.
About the Artist
An internationally celebrated designer and textile artist, Jarupatcha Achavasmit is also an educator in the Department of Architecture, Art and Design at King Mongkut Institute of Technology Ladkrabang. In addition, she is the founder and Art Director of Ausara, a small artisan studio whose diverse collective of weavers creates exquisite textiles by hand; and serves on the board of directors of the Chaipattana Foundation’s Patpat Project – a non-profit initiative that develops and markets products made from ingredients grown on Thailand’s small farms.
Jarupatcha’s affinity for textile art has been a lifelong endeavour. She originally learned needlework, knitting, and sewing under the tutelage of her grandmother, a seamstress instructor at the Royal Palace. She furthered her education in art studies at KTMIL, Thailand, the University of Michigan Ann Arbour, United States, and Central Saint Martins, United Kingdom.
In both her own creative work and her teaching at KMITL, Jarupatcha has specialised in the art of sustainable textile design. She has collaborated on projects with such prestigious co-creators as co-creators as Jim Thompson, Alexander Lamont, Tai Ping, Doi Tung, and Ake Atthasumpunna; and with venerable organizations like The International Trade Centre, and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Her woven and painted creations have been exhibited in festivals and galleries around the world, including Milan Art Week, the Mango Art Festival, Atta Gallery, Warin Lab Contemporary and Art Central Hong Kong.
