Held on the 27th of September, each year since the 80s, World Tourism Day is the perfect time to start dreaming about your next getaway. Not only does it remind us to book next year’s holiday but it also is a time when many companies offer juicy travel deals. So, if you need an extra push when it comes to organising some travel plans, take inspiration from these top destinations.

What is World Tourism Day?

World Tourism Day was created by the United Nations World Tourism Organization to promote the importance of travel and support sustainable growth in the tourism sector. Each year, the Tourism Day is given a theme and across the world, a series of Tourism Day activities such as talks, webinars or video premieres are planned all in an attempt to promote the positive side of world tourism. Feeling inspired? Discover our favourite places to travel to.

Press pause on life in the Maldives

Many of us have heard the phrase “Good things come in small packages” and this could not be more true when it comes to the idyllic islands of the Maldives. Nestled away in the Indian Ocean, Ari Atoll is home to a new luxury bolthole, the Barceló Whale Lagoon Maldives. This 5* resort offers views of icing sugar sand beaches and intricate coral reef gardens from each one of the beach and water villas.

Let your stresses melt away with a trip to the Mandara Spa followed by a dreamy sunset from the comfort of the hotel’s infinity pool. Or, if adventure is what you seek, the hotel offers guests the option to dive in the crystalline waters of the Ocean and if you are lucky you may be able to spot manta rays and whale sharks.

Discover the world of tourism in Dubai

One of the top travel destinations in 2023 is the Arabian oasis of Dubai. Known as being an adventure playground for the rich and elite, this state in the United Arab Emirates offers a holiday of pure luxury and relaxation.

Dubai Marina delivers some of the best luxury shopping experiences in Dubai as well as being considered one of the more laid-back neighbourhoods in the area.

When on holiday in Dubai, be sure to visit the big shopping mall while you are there or have a coffee in style in one of the many Insta-worthy cafés.

Don’t miss out on another photo opportunity with the Dubai Frame, the world’s biggest photo frame measuring a whopping 150m in height. This golden gilt masterpiece frames the city and provides a wow-factor view for all who visit. Of course, no trip to Dubai is complete without a trip to the beach where better than the golden Jumeirah Beach with its 1.7km boardwalk. But, in keeping with the theme of World Tourism Day, discover real Bedouin culture with a day trip into the desert to see the stars.

Celebrate International World Tourism Day in Africa

Just a short plane ride across the sea from the Canary Islands, lies the tantalising sun-drenched African continent. A popular destination for bohemians, lose yourself in the heady delights of a Moroccan street market or marvel at Tunisia’s whitewashed towns and villages. These two countries offer a world of breathtaking colours, lively people and a chance to experience an ancient and wise culture.

Explore the mystic delights of Morocco

Travel to Marrakech, the capital of Morocco and indulge your senses in the dizzying array of sights and sounds. Don’t miss the Yves Saint Laurent House and Museum which offers a glimpse at the fashion designer’s hidden life in Morocco as well as the chance to float around the beautifully kept gardens.

Hit the markets to stock up on local handicrafts before resting tired feet in one of the many rooftop cafés for a cup of mint tea – a local delicacy. Those who want to explore further afield can be inspired by Morocco’s top hotels in cities like Casablanca, Fez and Rabat.

Venturing further afield, Tunisia is a cosmopolitan haven in the Northern African desert landscape. The city of Sousse is a must-visit for those in search of all-year-round sunshine. Golden sand beaches are backed by olive groves giving this city a very Mediterranean feel.

Celebrate World Travel Day in the Canary Islands

If jet setting off to Dubai is not on the cards for you, why not celebrate Tourism Day by planning a trip to Europe’s own desert landscape, the Canary Islands? Located off the coast of the Western Sahara, these islands provide a climate of all year-round springtime making them an appealing destination for a tourism day celebration any time of the year.

World Travel Deals to Lanzarote

Discover the moon-like landscapes of Lanzarote as you walk through the rich fertile black volcanic surroundings which lend themselves perfectly to growing anything from grapevines to aloe vera. Lanzarote’s iconic terrain is populated with picturesque whitewashed houses and architectural marvels from the legendary artist, Cesar Manrique.

It is easy to fall under the spell of this mesmerising scenery especially when the island’s beaches offer the ideal spot for a relaxing break. Head to the south of the island where you can find the Barceló Tenerife 5* hotel, located in the heart of the San Blas Nature Reserve. Take to the dizzying heights of Tenerife’s El Teide volcano, Spain’s highest peak which offers world-class hiking routes during the day and one of the best skies for stargazing in the world by night.

Happy Tourism Day from Malaga

The south of Spain has always been a top travel location for those in search of winter sun and with only a short flight from the UK, it makes it a great destination for World Tourism Day. Travel to Malaga and enjoy the buzzing art scene, take a stroll along the golden sand of the city’s beach or step back in time with a visit to the towering cathedral. Malaga is home to some iconic attractions that are a must-see such as the Picasso Museum and the Alcazaba, an old Moorish palace with sea views.

Admire the Alhambra in Granada

Granada, a jewel of Andalusia in southern Spain, is a city that ignites the senses and captivates the soul. Its crowning glory, the Alhambra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a palace-fortress of breathtaking beauty, where intricate Moorish architecture meets lush gardens and panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada.

When visiting Granada, spend time wandering the narrow, winding streets of the historic Albaicín quarter, where the essence of mediaeval Spain comes alive with every step.

Tapas culture is a way of life here and no trip is complete without indulging in this timeless tradition. As the sun dips below the horizon, just like clockwork, the city awakens with the vibrant rhythms of flamenco, a passionate dance that mirrors the spirit of Granada itself.

Slow travel and sustainable tourism in the Sierra de Loja

Nestled amidst the serene landscapes of the Sierra de Loja, La Bobadilla, a Royal Hideaway Hotel, stands as a beacon of tranquillity and refinement.

The hotel’s captivating Mudejar architecture echoes Andalusia’s exotic past, while the interior whispers of opulence and elegance. Indulge in the slow pace of life and enjoy the expansive gardens, dotted with fountains and aromatic flora – ideal for contemplative strolls and moments of pure serenity.

Guests can also experience a Michelin-star culinary experience at La Finca, one of the hotel’s restaurants which serves a fusion of Andalusian and Mediterranean flavours, accompanied by the finest wines.

What’s more, the hotel is dedicated to regenerative tourism with many state-of-the-art systems in place to reduce its impact on the environment. Beyond the hotel’s walls, the Sierra de Loja offers a wealth of opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, and a whole host of outdoor pursuits.

Enjoy a mountain adventure in Canfranc

Nestled within the enchanting Pyrenees of northern Spain, Canfranc is a destination that whispers secrets of grandeur and mystery.

At its heart lies the captivating Canfranc International Railway Station, an architectural masterpiece that once welcomed European royalty and dignitaries.

Today, the station is now the Canfranc Estación, a Royal Hideaway Hotel and guests can explore the station’s opulent halls, where history echoes in every vaulted arch. Beyond the station, Canfranc beckons with pristine mountain vistas and charming mediaeval streets.

Stroll through the old town, where cobbled alleys reveal hidden treasures, and savour traditional Spanish cuisine at local bistros. Or, if you are feeling active this World Tourism Day, why not head out into nature and enjoy one of the many trekking routes close to the hotel?

Those travelling during ski season are in luck as Canfranc is located just a stone’s throw from some of the area’s top skiing sites.

World Tourism Day in Mexico

From the Pacific coastline to the bustling capital of DF, down to the fringes of the Caribbean shoreline, Mexico is a country of contrasts. If you are looking for an ultimate vacation, head to the Riviera Maya where you can float from pool to playa without leaving the comfort of your resort.

Yet for those wanting a taste of local culture, the area’s cenotes offer a unique aquatic experience and landmarks like Chichén Itzá take you back to ancient times.

Top tip! Don’t forget to try some typical Mexican cuisine washed down by a tequila or two.
