Undiscovered Bali: 7 alternative ideas for your next visit…

You’ve visited the monkey forest, hiked the great Gunung Agung mountain and spent oh-too-many hours sipping cocktails in Potato Head beach bar.

You know the best beaches and show-stopping restaurants, but are you’re looking to try something a little more, something undiscovered, alternative, something new?

Here are some ideas to add extra sparkle to your itinerary!

Meet the makers of Ubud

Shrines, temples, palaces, forests and emerald rice fields – Ubud is a trove of cultural treasures. Explore the Sukawati Art Market, the island’s most distinguished and long-standing art market, for traditional Balinese arts and crafts for sale.

Want to add something extra to your sojourn to Ubud? Make the short trip to Alam Puri Art Museum Resort & Spa. That’s right, a spa and museum in one! Nestled among over 70 acres of rice paddies, with art distributed throughout and a spa where you enjoy a traditional massage, it is an experience out of the ordinary.

Bike it, baby

If you are an experienced motorbike rider, there really is no better way to explore the island than on two wheels.

Head to Deus ex Machina in Canggu, order a Bootleg cold coffee and peruse the custom bikes to ignite your motor-head flame. Many shops rent custom bikes, so you will be spoilt for choice. Please always drive responsibly.

Enjoy the island life

Just off the coast of Bali is an abundance of picture perfect islands to explore for a day-trip or an overnight stay. Discover the Gili islands, Nusa Lembongan or the less foot-trodden Nusa Ceningan.

Get contemporary artsy

Head to the Ghostbird + Swoon Gallery in Sanur, and immerse yourself in this contemporary gallery featuring local artists with the aim to empower women.  Browse (and buy) statement jewellery, figurines and paintings handmade by various local (often female) artists.

Visit a local healer

Fans of Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat Pray Love will remember Ketut Liyer and Wayan, the Balinese healers in Ubud. At the time of publishing, both are still working their magic. The very elderly (age still undetermined!) Ketut is supervising his son with clients, and Wayan is behind her now-not-so-new-anymore shop counter.

Another popular healer is Mr Pak Sirkus in Canggu, North Kuta. Operating from his front porch, people from all corners of the earth queue to be seen by ‘The Healer of Canggu’, a traditional Balinese healer known for cracking bones and performing grand miracles on sore shoulders and twisted toes.

Hit the secret beach

There lies a secret, small but perfectly formed beach, which can only be accessed when the tide is on its way out at Blue Point beach in Ulu Watu. Head down the main steps between the rocks, and once you reach the sand, instead of heading into the obvious opening on the right, squeeze through the small rock passage on your left, which will curve around and open out into a little area which is just short of paradise. Disclaimer: Always check the tide times.

Spa on the rocks

Perhaps saving the best until last, at the Ayana Grotto Spa you can lie in a jacuzzi in a stalactite filled cave.
You’re very welcome!
